DIY Rope Home Décor

Are you a millennial who just purchased your first home? Congratulations, this is a very exciting time in your life! As you walk through your door, are you excited by what you see, or does a sense of dread rush through you as you realize that your old “apartment furniture” is where your “adult furniture” should be? The next thought that pops into your head is the thousands of dollars that you are going to have to invest in matching your new “adult home” with “adult furniture”. Have no fear, Plank Supply is here! From furniture and storage, to both indoor and outdoor décor, we have you covered. We understand that moving can be expensive. With that in mind, we have compiled a list of our favorite DIY Rope Home Décor Revamp ideas.

Side Table

We all have that wobbly side table that our parents gave us 3 years ago when we moved into our first apartment. You know, the one that you never wanted, but once you had it, you never wanted to get rid of because it reminded you of home, and now all you want to do with it is toss it in the dumpster. Yeah, that one. A simple way to turn that bland side table into a modern “adult home” friendly table is by wrapping it in rope. To achieve both a nautical look and durable design, we suggest using a Manila rope and a hot glue gun. Begin by gluing one edge of the rope to the bottom of the table being covered and simply continue in concentric circles around the table, dabbing glue as you go, until you have fully repurposed your newly upcycled modern table. As a finishing touch, place a piece of glass on top of the table to achieve a sleek style.

Seating

With the same principle of wrapping rope around an object to give it an updated look, our DIY experts have merged a tire with rope to unveil our newest concoction of a rope covered ottoman. Yes, that is right, we have come up with a use for that junk sitting in the garage that you never get to throwing away.

To achieve both a nautical look and durable design, we suggest using a Manila rope for indoor use and ProManila rope for outdoor use. ProManila is a strong synthetic rope alternative to our natural Manila rope. With this swap out, you can arrive at a similar look without sacrificing quality or durability when used outdoors. Additionally, we suggest that you secure a piece of plywood to the top of the tire, before wrapping the tire in rope. This will allow for a flat and sturdy ottoman top. For both of these projects begin by gluing one edge of the rope to the bottom of the tire. Simply continue in concentric circles around the table, dabbing glue as you go, until you have fully repurposed your shabby tire that you hid from view into a chic piece of furniture that you are excited to show your friends at your next Super Bowl party.

Storage

Who in their right mind could ever say that they have enough storage? Nobody, that is who. We all have those pesky cardboard shipping boxes lying around. Instead of throwing it away, try upcycling it into a storage box. This is a simple 4 item DIY upgrade. You will need a small shipping box, a pillow case, a glue gun, and Manila rope. For an individualized splash of color in your home, replace the Manila rope with your favorite color of Polypropylene rope. First, tape the bottom of the box closed. Next, fold the top tabs of the box inward. This will create an extra layer of support for your storage box. Now, drop the majority of the pillowcase into the box. Grab the edges of the pillowcase and stretch them around the edges of the box. (see image above). Lastly, have your rope and your glue gun ready to wrap the rope around the remainder of the exterior of the box, gluing as you go.
